Patterson Park Audubon Center leads school children, neighbors, and community/corporate groups in building bird habitat in Audubon’s native plant gardens in Patterson Park!
Established in 2008, these thriving habitats are constantly growing, and contain birds' most important food groups - insects, seeds, nuts, berries, and nectar. The Butterfly Garden, located on the western shore of the Boat Lake, contains many flowering perennials aimed at supporting pollinators and nectarivores, like ruby-throated hummingbirds, along with beneficial insects. The Wetland Garden, uphill and northwest of the Boat Lake, includes a rain garden to mitigate stormwater runoff while providing dense habitat and natural spaces for students and neighbors to play and explore.
Our volunteer Habitat Team works to make sure the gardens remain healthy habitats for the park’s birds and butterflies, and safe for people too. You can help! Weed, mulch, prune, and plant while relaxing outdoors with friends, family, and Audubon. Contact us to schedule a group of volunteers, or join our Habitat Team during their monthly volunteer days.
Habitat Team meets on the first Saturday of each month during the growing season (weather pending), from 9:00-10:30 AM. Tools, gloves, water, and snacks are provided, although volunteers are encouraged to bring their own if they have them. We are happy to sign community service hours for helpful students!
